You may have seen them around town at Phoenix Whole Foods stores and local farmer's markets; but now Scottsdale-based Gina's Homemade products are making their way into M.R. Designs & Gifts gift baskets for delivery all over the United States!

Chef Gina Buskirk and her husband, Chris, started Gina's Homemade LLC last year, 2010. The company makes delicious biscotti, the way Gina was taught by her mother, in a variety of flavors. In addition, Gina's Homemade makes other authentic Italian foods like artisanal cheeses, pasta sauces and fruit preserves.

The biscotti is made fresh to our order, in small batches. M.R. It's So Hot.... A little Summertime-in-Phoenix Gift Basket Humor

It's Summertime. It's Phoenix. It's a desert. You bet it's HOT!

How hot is it?

It’s so hot…I used the hot glue gun today for 20 minutes before I realized it wasn’t plugged in.

It’s so hot…The gift baskets are unwrapping themselves.

It’s so hot…The Goldwater's Chili Mix is having an identity crisis.

It's so hot...Instead of a fancy bow, the gift baskets are wearing shorts and flip flops.

Ok, so none of those are really true, just a little gift basket humor there for ya. It is 108 -110 degrees outside right now in Phoenix, maybe the heat has gone to my brain a little.

But in all seriousness, It’s so hot…we don’t ship chocolate during these hot summer months, typically mid-March through mid-October. Why not? Well, in order to maintain the integrity of the arrangement, and help ensure the happiness and satisfaction of the recipient, we substitute non-meltable products for any chocolate items typically found in the arrangement. Often times the chocolate products are replaced with comparably priced treats such as candy rocks (jelly beans), Cheri's Desert Harvest prickly pear cactus candy, Arizona high-desert pistachios; or chocolate Fairytale brownies, Urban Oven cocoa shortbread cookies or handmade chocolate biscotti.

Did you know that fudge has a melting point of 240 degrees, so it will only melt if you heat it up to that temperature? As a result we are able to include our Cerreta's fudge in shipped gift baskets, or as a substitute for meltable chocolate products. Fudge may get soft in the summer heat, but it won't melt like a candy bar. If it does get soft, simply put it in a cool place (air conditioned room) and it will firm right back up again.

At M.R. Designs & Gifts we do everything we can to ensure the integrity of our shipped packages.

Here's something else you probably didn't know: During the hot summer months, we coordinate with our shipping vendors for extra-late drop off. That way, our packages are not riding around in a truck, or sitting around on a dock somewhere, during the hottest part of the afternoon getting baked in the heat. Our packages stay cool in our studio until the absolute latest drop off available...so our packages leave the city in the cool of the evening and are off to their destinations. Yes, this takes extra time, and yes, this means driving extra distance, but we feel the integrity of the gift arrangement is worth the extra care.

So, stay cool. Stay hydrated. Protect your skin. And, enjoy Arizona!

Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries Get A New Name

For 10 years people have been raving about our Chocolate-Dipped Strawberries. They've been saying:

"These are the biggest, freshest and best chocolate-dipped strawberries I've ever had! Didn't want to share them!‎"

and

"[Y]ou should see the size of these chocolate covered strawberries……. Holy smokes. I think each one will be a meal in itself…..lol"

and

"The chocolate dipped strawberries were such a big hit that I had received a phone call from our clients just moments before my e-mailed confirmation of delivery. They were a big hit. "

and

Well, you get the picture.

Another thing we kept hearing is that "Chocolate-Dipped" just didn't seem to do our gift strawberries justice; especially when compared to the chocolate-dipped strawberries provided by other companies. Take a look for yourself at the comparison:

They suggested we should describe them as "Chocolate-Drowned Strawberries", "Chocolate-Bathed Strawberries", or "Huge Strawberries with So Much Chocolate On Them They Are A Meal In Itself". While that last one is very descriptive, it also didn't fit well in the marketing materials, so we decided on....."Chocolate-Drenched Strawberries"!

So, they have a new name, but are still as fabulous as ever! Haven't given them a try? Well, send some to your sweetie this Valentine's Day, maybe they'll share!

Hey, There's a Pomegranate in My Fruit Gift Basket!

Since Pomegranates are in season right now, they've been showing up in a lot of our fresh seasonal fruit gift baskets. Pomegranates are so delicious, full of health benefits and, I think, are a really fun snack. Just last night with a mouth full of seeds I told my husband, "Man, I could just eat these Pomegranate seeds like popcorn!" He said, "Really? Like popcorn?" After I ate my way through one and a half Pomegranates worth of seeds, I think he started to concede.

I've been eating Pomegranates since I was a kid, but honestly, it was always a messy task for me. I would take a wedge of it outside into the grass, bend over slightly and eat it like a watermelon. I don't know why, but I actually never knew it was ok to eat the seeds! My youngest daughter taught me to eat the seeds and all. But...it was still so messy! How do I get all of those delicious Pomegranate seeds out of the fruit without getting red juice everywhere or chewing on pith or the hard skin?

I've since found a few different techniques for getting the seeds out of the Pomegranate, but this one is my favorite so far...

I do it a little bit differently from the video, in that I don't cut the Pomegranate in half, but instead score around it (all the way around from crown to bottom to crown again, on two sides) about 1/4 inch deep, just through the skin, and break it open under water into four wedges. Then "invert" the wedges and push the seeds out with your fingers. With this technique I can de-seed three Pomegranates in a matter of 5 minutes.

I like this technique because a.) you don't cut all the way through the pomegranate thereby not getting red juice on yourself or the cutting board; b.) no juice goes squirting everywhere when the seeds pop out; and c.) the seeds easily separate from the pith which is discarded.

Now, I have a bowl of fresh Pomegranate seeds waiting for me in the refrigerator anytime I want! I've even been packing a handful of seeds for my girls' school lunches. They love it!

Here is another technique which involves smacking the Pomegranate with a wooden spoon; but with this one I still get red juice squirted on my hands and on the countertop, so you decide which one works best for you...

TODAY'S HOLIDAY is "U.S. Coast Guard Day"

August 4, 2010 is U.S. Coast Guard Day which honors the military branch that protects our waters and shorelines. This day is primarily an internal celebration for all Coast Guard personnel and their families, past and present. But it's also a day when Americans salute those who serve in this important military organization.

"Semper Paratus" (always prepared) is the motto of the United States Coast Guard, a branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.

On August 4, 1790, the Revenue Cutter Service was created by the U.S. Congress. Congress authorized the construction of ten cutters. These ships were built to enforce U.S. tariff laws. The name "Coast Guard" was first used in 1915.

U.S. Department of Labor statistics show that there are more than 4.1 million secretaries and administrative assistants working in the U.S., and 8.9 million people working in various administrative support roles.

Are you wondering if perhaps Administrative Professionals Day (or some refer to it as Administrative Assistant's Day) wasn't started by the greeting card companies in order to sell more cards? Nope...

Since 1952, the International Association of Administrative Professionals has sponsored Administrative Professionals Week as a way to honor these hard working office administrators. Administrative Professionals Week is an annual event "to recognize the valuable contributions of office support staff in business and government, and to encourage students to consider careers as administrative professionals."

Today, Administrative Professionals Week/Day is one of the largest workplace observances (not a public holiday) - other than the celebrating of employee birthdays or major holidays.

In 2000, the IAAP changed the name for Professional Secretaries Week/Day to Administrative Professionals Week/Day, in order to keep pace with changing job titles and the expanding responsibilities of today’s administrative workforce. According to the IAAP, many workers around the world still hold the “secretary” job title; however, many alternative titles have become more popular, such as administrative assistant, office coordinator, administrative specialist, executive assistant or office manager.

Administrative Professionals Day is celebrated worldwide. Your gift basket company is actually a part of your marketing team...every gift they send on your behalf is a reflection of your personal brand or corporate image, just like your website, business card or brochure. What are your gift baskets saying about your company?

But if you don't already have a relationship with a Gift Basket Designer, how do you find the best local gift basket companies in your area? Here are a few suggestions:

+ Do a Google Local Search for a gift basket company right in your city (ie. "gift baskets in phoenix"). You can even get more specific, like "best custom gift baskets in phoenix" - the more specific your search terms, the more relavent your results will be. From there you can check the company's Google listing, gift basket photos, online client reviews and website.

+ Search your LinkedIn contacts for a gift basket company or gift basket Designer in your network. From your LinkedIn Home page, just type "gift baskets" in the People search box, view the results and filter by location as desired. Voila! You may only be one connection away from a gift basket company in your city. You can see who in your network is connected to the gift basket designer, review the company's qualifications, and see who has used and recommends their services. Here are 5 steps for placing a custom gift basket order:

1. Find a Local Gift Basket Company in the Area for Hand Delivery. Do a Google Local Search for a gift basket company right in the city where your gift will be delivered (ie. "gift baskets in phoenix"). You can even get more specific, like "best custom gift baskets in phoenix" - the more specific your search terms, the more relavent your results will be. From there you can check the company's Google listing, gift basket photos, online client reviews and website.

2. Call the Local Gift Basket Company Directly and Ask to Speak to the Gift Basket Designer. If the company does not have a "Designer" or is otherwise unable to easily create a custom gift basket arrangment for you, it may be that their gift baskets are premade or drop-shipped.

3. Know Your Budget. It is extremely helpful if the Designer can be aware of your budget when suggesting customization options for your gift basket arrangement. If you say something like "I don't want to spend too much money", a good Designer will ask "What does that mean to you." It's easier to know where to aim when the target has been clearly marked.

4. Tell the Designer your Customization Specifications. If you are unsure of what type of gift basket your recipient might enjoy, an experienced Designer will ask you questions about his or her likes/dislikes, hobbies and anything you may know about them. The Designer will then offer suggestions for a custom gift basket within your budget.

5. Finalize the Order Details and Payment as Usual. Remember, you will need to know the recipient's delivery information: including name, (company name), address and phone and any details necessary to ensure a smooth delivery. In a regular conversation with a regular person on a regular day, I happened to mention a regular something-or-other that I read on Twitter. Then it happened...again..."I HATE TWITTER!"

This used to shock me. I'm a pretty easy-going person that gets along with everyone, so honestly, the first two or three times a person burst out to my face "I hate Twitter!" I was a little taken aback. Not anymore. But to tell you the truth, it's getting a little annoying.

I blame, among other "what I had for lunch" nonsense generating hype, the telecom commercial where the dad is tweeting to his son who is standing right next to him on the patio, "I'm sitting on the patio." If this is the only definition of Twitter that some people know, then yes, it's not that useful...but hate-worthy? (By the way...you know who DOES care if you had a Starbucks coffee this morning on your way to work and they forgot the extra foam? @Starbucks, that's who...and believe me, they are right on top of their brand.)

I politely ask, "Do you hate Twitter because...
Communication is happening through it?
Small businesses are growing because of it?
Unedited global news is being transmitted through it?
Customer service reps can interact directly with upset (or happy) clients?
Businesses have direct access to their target market?
And SO much more..."

"Do you hate Email, IM, Blogging, RSS feeds, Newsletters, Direct Mail (all of which Twitter does, with a power boost)? While we're at it, do you hate TV, Newspapers or Radio? How about the telephone. Do you hate the telephone?"

Then I ask "WHY do you hate Twitter?" The response is usually something along the lines of "Um, I think it's stupid. It's just a waste of time." TRANSLATION: "I don't get it."

It's fine if you don't GET Twitter. Although I don't think one really needs a Master's degree in Marketing to understand that if you have something to say, something to sell, something to promote, something to ask or something to give - you should be on Twitter. But is Twitter - that which is fundamentally, and most simply, a communication tool - really worthy of ones hatred; or as I heard said once...the sign of the coming Armageddon? Was there this much hostility towards the telephone receiver? Someone will need to enlighten me on that subject.

I will usually then say something like... "Did you know that the only news out of Iran during the elections was through Twitter because the Iranian government jammed all other outlets?" Or, "Did you know that our first news and photos of the Hudson River airplane crash was through Twitter? And don't get me started on the Mumbai terror attacks." Or, "Do you want to widen your readership/client base, drive traffic to your blog/website, network with your target market, find new members for your organization in your area with a single #hashtag, or talk to people who are looking for your product RIGHT NOW?" *breath*

At this point, I'll usually see some softening of the muscles in the neck and shoulders of the Twitter-Hater, their head will cock slightly to one side, and some of the redness will begin to recede from their face, while an imaginary light bulb starts to flicker above their head.

To bring it closer to home I'll give concrete examples...like how I've been interviewed for a upcoming book because of Twitter. How I put a new gift basket on my website and sold 3 of them in 5 minutes because of one tweet. How my fruit gift basket sales have increased because of a blog and it's Twitter promotion. How I've found local suppliers through Twitter referrals. How I track click-thrus from Twitter to my blog and website - even to specific products. How I'm working to establish myself as the Arizona Gift Basket Expert. How I was able to help over 200 people in two days who asked "When is Father's Day anyway?" How I got to have a Tweet Up with Shaq. How once, for however brief a moment it was, Ashton Kutcher was actually following me. And really, there is so much more...

By this time, the Twitter-Hater will usually say one of three things..."Hmm, I can kinda understand it now, but it's not for me." Which is fine! Or, "That's pretty cool, I never thought of it like that before." Which is good!! Or, "My mind is flying in all different directions. I can totally see how this can help my business. Will you help me get started?" Which is great!!!

Whether our client is honoring their father, their step-father, uncle, brother, or even that special "father figure" in their life...if they are struggling, it typically all comes down to two questions: 1.) "When is Father's Day anyway?" and 2.) "What in the world do I get my dad for Father's Day?"

When is Father's Day?
Father's Day is celebrated woldwide on various dates throughout the year, although the majority of countries, including the U.S., celebrate Father's Day on the 3rd Sunday in June...

What to get Dad for Father's Day?
Don't stress. I think most dads would agree that the best gift of all would be the opportunity to spend time together. Hold On To The Clients You Have

Did you know that it is more expensive to acquire new clients than to service and take care of the ones that you already have? If you know your cost to acquire new clients (the cost to acquire the lead plus the value of the time you spend to convert that lead) you can easily see that making small investments in the relationships you already have can cost you much less and yield you much more, via relationship referrals, than simply getting caught in the transaction trap of constantly acquiring and losing clients. The Top 5 things you can do to set up a "Thank You" program:

1. Get to know your clients. Find out how they liked to be thanked. Find out their birthdays and anniversaries. Find out what is important to them. Then put a plan together to give it to them.

2. Research your options. There are all kinds of things you can do: send custom gift baskets, send cards, email drip campaigns, brownies, referral programs, etc. Spend some time and examine what you could be doing.

3. Systematize your choices. Will you do something monthly? Will you do something quarterly? Write it out and systematize it. There are lots of great programs out there that allow you to set it and forget it. It goes to work FOR you.

4. Make personal outreach calls. Personal touches far outweigh impersonal touches - so pick up the phone and talk with your customers. Find out how they are doing and help them be successful - even if they don't buy this time. It's hard for a competitor to replicate that kind of relationship.

5. Get on LinkedIn and Facebook and get connected to your customers. Increasingly, your customers are moving to online social networks.. They'll share a wealth of information that will help you better serve them and build the kind of relationships that last a lifetime.

It doesn't matter if you can't invest a sizeable sum in each client. Just make sure that it's less than or equal to your current cost of client acquisition. Doing something is better than doing nothing. So stop what you're doing, take 30 minutes to begin implementing something, and harvest the results for years to come.

European Style Gift Hampers

While assisting clients this past holiday season, we had the pleasure of working with several International vendors for deliveries in each of their respective countries, including places like Ireland, New Zealand, France and England. In fact, one day our staff calculated that we had coordinatined gifts across a total of 30 different cities, 14 states, 5 countries on 4 continents, that day alone!

The European Style Gift Hamper is different from an American-style "Gift Basket" in that the gourmet products are arranged neatly and completely down inside of a trunk or "hamper" style container, lid shut, and tied around with a simple bow. This style elminiates excess filler, packaging and wrap and also makes for a smaller parcel for shipping - using a smaller box and eliminating excess packaging.

Cultural Business Gift Giving

Sending a gift to a client or business with a cultural distinctiveness can pose some challenges, but can be very rewarding if proper consideration is taken. The following tips can help to ease the tension that may arise when considering a gift of ethnic or cultural uniqueness. It may also help to inform you of your client or business partner's particular preferences, and therefore create a closer relationship of appreciation and understanding.

Do some research. The uncertainty of how a gift will be received by a client or business with a cultural distinctiveness can be eased by some simple research of their culture. Certain foods restrictions, presentation rituals, and/or religious considerations may need to be accounted for depending on the occasion, time of year and belief system.

The Jewish/Israeli Client- It is appropriate to send food to the home of a Jewish family during times of sympathy or condolence; remembering to be respectful of any dietary restrictions. Consider sending a kosher gift to the Jewish or Israeli client.

The French Client- When sending a business gift to a French client, do not include a business card. This is considered improper according to French business etiquette.

The Asian Client- Gifts are traditionally given in Asia at the start of a new relationship or at the end of a successful meeting. This is an expression of both hope in a prosperous future as well as friendship.

The Japanese Client- A gift exchange is a strong symbol of a solid business relationship and is an integral part of the Japanese business process.

The Chinese Client- The Chinese custom is to refuse a gift when presented, but don't stop offering. To avoid the appearance of greed, the Chinese will refuse a gift three times before accepting. When the gift is accepted, make certain to say how very pleased you are. Although reciprocal gift exchange is considered proper etiquette, if you are offered a gift it is expected that you also refuse in the same manner.

The Taiwanese Client- The Taiwanese business culture also includes the popular practice of reciprocal gift giving. It is wise to have a varied array of gifts readily available in the event that you are the recipient of an unexpected gift.

The Indonesian Client- Presenting a modest but thoughtful gift representing your country or company at the first meeting indicates your desire to develop a long-term business relationship. However, if invited by your Indonesian business partner to a dinner party, wait until after the party to send an appropriate gift, perhaps a small fruit arrangement; otherwise, it may be interpreted as an insult as to the adequacy of your host's hospitality.

Ideally, the gifts you select should be a reflection of your thoughtfulness, creativity and good taste. The "Tips on Business Gifting Etiquette" assembled here can be useful through the business gifting process.

Avoid the "Oops" - Many companies (for example government and media outlets) have limiting or prohibitive gift acceptance policies in place. Prior to sending a gift, it is always a good idea to contact the recipient's company regarding any gift acceptance policies that may exist in order to avoid your recipient having to decline or refuse your gift.

Have you wondered "Why would I ever send a gift basket?", or "When is it appropriate to send a gift basket?" This is a legitimate question for those whose only exposure to gift baskets may be what they see at the "big box" stores...a mass-produced, mostly-packaging arrangement of dubious products that most people wouldn't dare to consume.

Father's Day - June 15, 2008

Ahh! Another Father's Day is almost here upon us. That wonderful season when we take the time to honor good 'ole dad for his selfless labors, for all his hard work and dedication, and for not killing me when I ran over a parking garage cement barrier in the '66 Mustang convertible he was restoring and just had custom painted and then not telling him when I got home but trying to hide it until he "accidentally" found out for himself and then wondered how it got there......or was that just me?

Actually, I'm still surprised that he let me drive that car at all. But, now that I am a parent too, I do truly appreciate the sentiment: "Well, at least you didn't get hurt."

Anyways...how we as Americans celebrate Father's Day hasn't changed much over the 100-or-so years since wonderful Mrs. Dodd. Children used to prepare special meals and desserts as a treat for dad on Father's Day. If they happened to live apart, children would make an effort to visit.

Although time spent together makes the greatest gift of all, we here at M.R. Designs & Gifts are pleased to be able to assist in sending that "just right" sentiment across the miles, to father's all over the globe, when that special visit is just not possible.

"Thanking" Your Referral Sources - Part 1

Remember when you were a kid and your mom or dad “forced” you to write thank you letters to your friends and family for all of your birthday gifts? Well, hopefully you’ve kept up the habit in your professional life. If you have not, you should consider making it your custom once again.

As business by referral is so important these days, it is vital to “Thank” your referral sources. Just one of the reasons to do so is simply Common Courtesy.

Consider a referral as a “gift” to you. Your referral source has put themselves and their reputation on the line to hand you that business – they didn’t have to, it may not even have been an easy “sell”. An immediate “Thank You” in the form of a small gift or note is required. This is not about the potential profitability of the referral – this is about rewarding the behavior of giving. Tell them why it was such a good referral and reassure them about what a great job you will do for them and their referral.

If the referral you received was actually not a good referral for you, send a Thank You anyway and tell them why; take this opportunity for a little more training of your source. It is far better to send a note or small gift right away to show that you appreciate their support than to wait a month or two and send a larger gift...maybe...IF you close the deal. It is important that you let them know as soon as possible that you appreciate their confidence and trust.
